                                    Chapter 3

Dong Wenzhong was still reeling from the slap, frozen in place, unable to react.

Xu Jianguo’s face was stern as he looked at Dong Wenzhong. “Comrade Dong,” he said firmly, “you should return for now. I’ll get to the bottom of this.”

His voice was calm, but the weight of his final words carried a sharp warning. “If I find out who’s lying... I won’t let it go.”

That statement hit like a thunderclap.

Chen Yanran, already pale, turned ghostly white. As the onlookers slowly dispersed, her body weakened and she nearly collapsed.

Dong Wenzhong caught her just in time, his arms steadying her with concern. His eyes were full of distress as he asked anxiously, “Yanran, are you alright? Don’t worry, I’ll handle everything.”

Then, catching sight of her red and swollen cheek, his expression turned furious. “Who hit you? Was it that Xu Ying? That wretched woman?”

Thinking about Xu Ying’s usual unrestrained and sharp attitude, Dong Wenzhong clenched his fists in frustration.

Chen Yanran gave a small nod, her expression frail. Her delicate and innocent appearance easily evoked sympathy. Compared to Xu Ying—who often carried a cold and proud demeanor—Chen Yanran seemed all the more gentle and well-mannered. It was easy to see why so many young men in the village were fond of her.

At that moment, Father Xu entered the yard, his face dark with anger after witnessing the scene.

Inside the room, Mother Xu hurried to her daughter, anxiety written all over her face. “Yingying, do you feel unwell? Are you hurting anywhere else?” she asked urgently.

Seeing her daughter staring off blankly, her heart sank. “Yingying? Say something, will you? Don’t scare your mother like this!”

A wave of dread hit her. What if her daughter had suffered lasting damage? Just the thought nearly drove her to tears.

“Jianguo!” she cried out. “Come quickly and see what’s wrong with our daughter. Is she... is she going to have another episode?!”

“Mom, I’m fine,” Xu Ying finally whispered.[Read More Here] Then, with tears brimming in her eyes, she threw herself into her mother’s arms and sobbed, “Mom, I’m so scared!”

Scared of a life without her family. In her previous life, she had caused their ruin—sacrificing everything for a man who wasn’t worth it.

Relieved by her daughter's crying, Mother Xu gently patted her back. “You silly girl. So now you know what fear feels like, huh? How many times did I tell you not to go near the river? You wouldn’t listen! Do you finally admit you were wrong?”

Xu Ying nodded quickly, tears still rolling down her cheeks, but her voice held a gentle smile. “Yes, Mom. I was wrong.”

Father Xu, who had arrived upon hearing his wife’s cries, saw his daughter in her mother's embrace. His stern face softened visibly.

Still nestled in her mother’s arms, Xu Ying looked toward her father with urgency. “Dad, you need to go to the Lu family and check on Lu Daya. She’s the one who saved me—I remember that clearly. I passed out after she pulled me out of the river.”

Father Xu’s expression changed at once. “So it was Lu Daya who saved you? That explains why she fell sick too.”

He clenched his jaw. “Chen Zhiqing had the nerve to take credit for it?”

He suddenly felt ashamed for not investigating more thoroughly earlier. The matter had escalated quickly, and Chen Zhiqing had taken advantage of it.

Mother Xu rolled her eyes. “Didn’t I say that girl Chen Zhiqing was a vixen? Cunning as a fox, not a kind bone in her body! And you didn’t believe me. Look what happened now—ha! The truth always comes out.”

“Quick, go check on the Lu family. That girl’s been burning with fever for days. Don’t let her end up with something serious!”

She let out a sigh. Lu Daya was a poor girl. Her mother favored sons and never treated her like a proper daughter. Word around the village was that Lu Daya had taken ill, but her mother refused to pay for treatment and even argued with her husband over it.

Father Xu looked awkward after being scolded but said nothing, lowering his head and trying to quietly slip out.

Just as he lifted a foot out the door, Xu Ying spoke again. “Dad, I’ll go with you.”

He hesitated, but Mother Xu immediately objected. “What’s this nonsense? Yingying just recovered! You want to drag her out when she’s still so weak? What if she catches a chill and gets worse?”

Father Xu quickly backpedaled. “Right, right, I didn’t think of that. Yingying, you rest at home. I’ll go myself and be back soon.”

Xu Ying looked at her mother, the warmth of her concern making her heart ache. She nodded gently at her father. “Dad, please make sure to thank Daya properly.”

Father Xu nodded. He grabbed a pack of snacks from the cupboard and a basket of fresh eggs from the kitchen before hurrying off.

Outside the door, Xu Ying’s older brother rushed in. “Mom! Is little sister okay?”

He had just returned from fetching water in the village when he heard she’d woken up. But someone had the audacity to claim she was dead—he’d punched that person square in the face. Who dares curse his little sister?

“She’s fine,” Mother Xu replied with a huff. “Go tell your wife to make some egg custard for Yingying. Your sister’s been through hell—she needs proper nourishment!”

Brother Xu grinned and nodded. “Right away!”

Xu Ying could hear her second brother’s cheerful voice from the kitchen:[Read More Here] “Sister-in-law, Mom says to make some egg custard for little sister. She just woke up and needs something soft.”

Sister-in-law Xu clearly wasn’t thrilled, but she agreed.

Once everyone had left, Xu Ying gazed at the rough adobe ceiling above her, still feeling a little dazed.

Just a while ago... wasn’t she battling zombies?

Then she remembered—the bracelet!

Where was the bracelet Master had given her? Panic rising in her chest, Xu Ying began searching frantically. That bracelet was the last thing her master had given her before—

Her heart tightened painfully at the memory. If she hadn’t insisted on going out for supplies that day, they wouldn’t have been caught in the zombie wave. Her master wouldn’t have needed to save her.

After her death in the previous life, she had transmigrated into the apocalypse. It was there that she met her master.

He was the closest person to her after losing her family. She had been powerless, alone, without abilities—barely surviving.

Until one day, she saw an old man being beaten by a group for stealing a cabbage. She didn’t know why, but she used a whole bottle of purified water to save him.

From that moment on, everything changed.

He gained healing powers. She gained space powers.

They became a team, scavenging and storing supplies, surviving together. Master was a descendant of a royal chef—his cooking was unmatched. As long as they avoided large zombie swarms, they could get by.

But their abilities were soon discovered, and they were recruited by a base.

Even after joining, their lives didn’t improve much. They were assigned to the logistics team—he healed the injured, she provided weapons and collected leftover supplies. They were always hungry, always tired, living off disgusting nutrient paste.

That’s why she’d secretly hide a bit of supplies each time.

Her space gradually filled with goods. She and Master would hide away, cook secretly, and share real food.

Since he couldn’t enter the space, she always cooked alone—and every time, he would grumble about her cooking.

But he still ate every bite.
