The Lucky Wife of the Era Married a Rough Man With Space
Chapter 2
First, his daughter died. Then their son. The grief came too quickly and too heavily. Xu Ying’s mother couldn’t withstand the string of tragedies, and before long, she too passed away from depression.
Left alone and unsupported, her sister-in-law became the target of even more abuse. Tormented, ridiculed, and without anyone to turn to, she eventually gave up and ended her own life.
Her second and third brothers fared no better. With no parental guidance or protection, one of them was lured in by the local gangs and ended up stealing for them. In the end, he suffered a fall and became permanently disabled. The other got involved in black market trading, was caught, and sent to prison.
Meanwhile, Dong Wenzhong and Chen Yanran, after taking the money Xu Ying had given them, left the village and started a business. Their fortunes soared. They opened multiple stores, had a son and a daughter, and lived a happy, comfortable life.
Later, Xu Ying tried every possible way to find them. Before she could confront them and hold them accountable, she was abducted—by none other than Dong Wenzhong and Chen Yanran.
She would never forget the twisted, disgusting faces of that vile couple. Chen Yanran sat smugly in front of her, a mocking smile playing on her lips.
"Xu Ying," she said with a sneer, "I’ve never met anyone as stupid as you. But lucky for us that you exist.
Thanks to you, Wen Zhong and I were able to get out of that hellhole and start over in the city. We owe you our happiness. Do you know how grateful we are?"
Xu Ying sat in the chair, fury and grief erupting inside her. Her face twisted, and suddenly, she coughed up a mouthful of blood, staining her clothes red.
Chen Yanran didn’t stop. With a flirtatious glance at Dong Wenzhong, she continued with a sinister smile.
"Want to know how your third brother got caught?" she asked.
Xu Ying’s heart clenched, and her eyes flared with rage. "Chen Yanran, what do you mean by that?"
Chen Yanran’s smile widened. [Read More Here] "He heard from Dong Wenzhong that you were seriously ill and had no money for treatment. So he risked going to the black market to earn quick cash—and then we tipped off the authorities. That’s how he was arrested."
"Tell me, all these people who love and care for you, and yet you never cherish them. Why is that?"
"You—Chen Yanran, I’ll kill you!" Xu Ying screamed, overwhelmed with rage. She broke free from the ropes binding her and lunged toward Chen Yanran with a blade. But before she could strike, Dong Wenzhong struck her from behind with a glass bottle.
She bled out and died.
Remembering the moment of her death, Xu Ying glared at Chen Yanran with bone-deep hatred.
"You said you saved me? Then let’s see—can you swim?"
"If you really rescued me, then come to the river and swim in front of everyone. Prove it."
With that, Xu Ying grabbed Chen Yanran’s arm and dragged her out.
Startled by her cold, determined expression, Chen Yanran had no time to react before being pulled away.
The noise and chaos from the captain’s house had already drawn a crowd. Now, seeing Xu Ying dragging Chen Yanran outside, everyone craned their necks curiously.
"Xu Ying? Aren’t you supposed to be dead?"
"Dead? Your whole family is dead!" Xu’s mother exploded with anger. "My daughter is alive and well! Who dares curse her? I’ll tear your mouth off!"
This shameless brat dared to jinx her daughter? She would remember these people and settle scores when the time came.
"Xu Ying, why are you pulling Comrade Chen like that?" someone asked, used to Xu’s mother’s fiery temper.
People were more curious about the scene unfolding between Xu Ying and Chen Yanran.
" Comrade Chen saved your life, and you’re treating her like this? Aren’t you being ungrateful?"
Xu Ying laughed coldly, her eyes sharp. "She says she saved me—but I clearly remember the eldest daughter of the Lu family pulling me out. So I want to get to the bottom of who actually saved me."
"The eldest daughter of the Lu family? Now that you mention it, something did happen to her that day. She’s still unconscious, isn’t she?" someone remarked.
Chen Yanran’s face went pale. She couldn’t swim at all. If Xu Ying really dragged her into the river, she’d drown for sure.
She struggled desperately. "Xu Ying, I don’t feel well! Please, can’t I just stay out of the water?"
Someone watching joked loudly, "Comrade Chen , what’s the matter? Can’t swim or just don’t want to go in?
I find it strange—Xu Ying is taller and stronger than you. Are you saying she couldn’t lift herself out of the river? What’s she weigh—over ninety kilos?"
Laughter rippled through the crowd as curiosity grew.
Xu Jianguo watched the drama unfold, his daughter gripping ComradeChen tightly, and his expression darkened. "I’m going to the Lu family to get answers," he said coldly.
Chen Yanran panicked. She had assumed Xu Ying had been unconscious the whole time and wouldn’t know who saved her.
In truth, it was the Lu family’s eldest daughter who had saved Xu Ying. But after dragging her out, she too passed out. There had been a large crowd that day, so Dong Wenzhong suggested Chen Yanran wet her clothes to fake the appearance of a rescue. The title of “savior” fell to her.
Chen Yanran had thought that being Xu Ying’s savior would curry favor with Captain Xu and earn her an easier life. Even if Xu Ying recovered, she wouldn’t dare expose them—especially not if she still liked Dong Wenzhong.
They’d prepared for every possibility… except for this.
Now, Xu Ying looked like she had snapped.[Read More Here] That girl just now had stared at her with such hatred—it sent shivers down her spine.
Did she remember something?
Frantic, she looked around and spotted Dong Wenzhong in the crowd. As if clutching at a lifeline, she shouted, " Comrade Dong ! You saw it! Tell them—I saved Xu Ying, right?"
Everyone turned to look at him. Dong Wenzhong, caught in the spotlight, couldn’t stay hidden any longer.
He stepped forward with a warm, gentle smile. "Yingying, I can vouch for Comrade Chen . She saved you."
"And how exactly are you going to prove that?" Xu Ying scoffed, stepping back in disgust. "I’m not blind. I saw clearly who pulled me from the river."
Dong Wenzhong’s expression froze. He hadn’t expected her to embarrass him in public.
"Yingying, you don’t believe me?" he asked, hurt.
Xu Ying nearly laughed. Believe him? The nerve!
Why had she loved such a disgusting man in her past life?
Suppressing her fury, she asked coldly, "Why are you helping Comrade Chen lie?"
Dong Wenzhong’s expression shifted, and he stepped closer, lowering his voice. "Xu Ying, what are you trying to do? This isn’t funny."
But Xu Ying couldn’t hold back anymore. With a sharp crack, she slapped him across the face.
"Get lost! Stay away from me!"
Everyone around them was stunned.
Who didn’t know how much Xu Ying liked Comrade Dong ? She used to follow him around like a puppy, offering him steamed buns, eggs, even chicken drumsticks—always treating him like a king.
All the young men in the village were jealous, and some girls bitterly wished they were the object of her affection instead.
Now, suddenly, she was turning on him?
Xu’s parents were equally shocked.
Xu Ying still had a pounding headache from the fever, and seeing Dong Wenzhong had only intensified her anger. She couldn’t take it anymore.
Turning to her mother, she said, "Mom, I’m still not feeling well. I want to go lie down for a while."
Xu’s mother immediately rushed to her side, heart aching. She helped Xu Ying inside without another word.
As for the people still standing around watching, she scolded them furiously: "What are you all looking at? Move aside! If you delay my daughter’s rest and something happens again, I’ll see to it none of you leave in one piece!"
Xu Jianguo, too, was worried and shouted sternly, "Why are you all standing around? Go home! Eat! Work!"
As the village captain’s authority rang out, the crowd quickly scattered, muttering and dispersing in all directions.
