The Lucky Wife of the Era Married a Rough Man With Space

                                 Chapter 169

Xu Ying gazed at Huo Chen, finding his embarrassed expression utterly charming. Unable to resist, she reached out and gently pinched his handsome cheek. The soft touch of her hand against his skin caused Huo Chen's eyes to widen, his expression momentarily blank. She had actually touched him, in broad daylight, in full view of everyone! In the next instant, a deep blush crept up his neck and spread across his cheeks.

Xu Ying, still pinching, thought to herself that his cheek felt remarkably good. Huo Chen stood rigidly, his back stiff. "This... there are too many people here, it's not suitable!"

Xu Ying was taken aback, then her eyes fell upon Huo Chen's crimson earlobes. A mischievous grin played on her lips. "Then, when I get off work later, you can find me where I live. No one will be there." Huo Chen's pupils dilated, his face a mask of shock. "This is inappropriate!"

"I don't care," Xu Ying retorted, giving him a playful wink before returning to her work. "Remember to find me after you get off work!" Huo Chen remained rooted to the spot, flushed with embarrassment, a mixture of nervousness and bewilderment swirling within him.

Xu Ying retreated to the kitchen, immersing herself in work, but Huo Chen continued to stand there, visibly flustered. "Brother Chen, why don't you go  to work this afternoon?" Wu Qingsong approached, clapping him on the shoulder. Huo Chen's expression snapped back to normal. The thought of Xu Ying asking him to visit her that evening  left him conflicted. Xu Ying was still so young, and he had no desire to hurt her. But she was openly trying to seduce him; to not go would be an act of utter cowardice.

"Brother Chen, what are you thinking about?" Wu Qingsong asked, noticing his friend's continued silence and patting his shoulder again. Huo Chen suddenly roused himself, looked at Wu Qingsong, and declared, " I'll Go."

[Read More Here] Zhou Kun, it seemed, had acquired a significant batch of goods. If sold, it promised a substantial profit. He had already finalized arrangements with the black market contacts for the delivery that very night. Wu Qingsong's face lit up with a joyous smile at the prospect. With this money, he could finally marry Sister-in-law Lancao. Just yesterday, he had visited Sister-in-law Lancao's mother, who had agreed to their marriage for five hundred yuan. This particular transaction involved not only a large quantity of goods but also an immense profit. If all went well, he stood to earn at least a thousand yuan. He had already meticulously planned how to allocate the money: five hundred for Sister-in-law Lancao's mother, and the remaining five hundred as a bride price for Sister-in-law Lancao herself. Armed with this promising news, Wu Qingsong found his meal tasted even sweeter.

Xu Ying, throughout the day, felt an unsettling sensation, a nagging feeling that something was amiss. The realization didn't strike her until she finished work. She had intended to ask Huo Chen to relay a message to her third uncle, inviting him to visit her in the county town tomorrow. Now, she wondered if Huo Chen would actually come to her place later. The thought brought a flutter of anticipation. Huo Chen, for all his wolf-dog appearance, was, in reality, a bit of a shy puppy, easily flustered and seemingly inexperienced in matters of the heart. Yet, he still possessed that inherent dominance, an overwhelming aura when he stood his ground.

Xu Ying had dinner at the restaurant, then returned home to wash up. As she entered her house and approached the dressing table, she picked up her comb only to see a few bold words written on the table: "I have something to do tonight, come another day, Huo Chen!"

Xu Ying's eyes widened in shock, her small face reflecting utter disbelief. How had Huo Chen gotten into her house? He must have broken the lock. But what could he be doing so late at night? Her mind immediately jumped to black market transactions; after all, that was how Huo Chen earned his living. Everyone in the village believed he made his fortune by selling wild animals. Having dealt with Huo Chen so many times, she knew perfectly well that he operated in the black market. The thought of him working so late into the night stirred a pang of sympathy within her.

Xu Ying sat before the mirror, combing her hair gently. She was naturally beautiful, with fair skin and a rosy lip color that made her bare face captivating. With a soft click, the wooden comb snapped. Her hair was soft and smooth, yet the comb had broken. A little upset, Xu Ying put down the comb and climbed into bed.

In the early morning, the first rays of sunlight pierced through the window, illuminating Xu Ying's room with a dazzling brilliance. Stirred by the light, Xu Ying rubbed her eyes, quickly dressed, and set out for work. As she stepped onto the road, a passing car caught her attention. Standing behind it, unmistakably, was Zhou Kun.

Xu Ying's heart lurched. Zhou Kun had been arrested in her previous life; she had seen it in the newspaper then. Now, he was in the car, his hands shackled, just as she remembered from the news article.

"Girl, excuse me for a moment," a woman with a camera suddenly appeared. She aimed her lens at the car, pressed the shutter, and then bumped into Xu Ying.

"Auntie, what's going on?" Xu Ying asked an elderly woman in the crowd who was eagerly watching the scene unfold. The female reporter who had bumped into Xu Ying chimed in, "This group of people seems to have been involved in smuggling last night, and they finally got caught. These people are so brazen, daring to smuggle! This is even worse than speculation."

Upon hearing this, Xu Ying's slender fingers trembled involuntarily, and her face turned pale. "Girl, what's wrong? Did I hit you too hard just now?" the female reporter asked, concerned that she had been too forceful with the seemingly delicate girl, who appeared to be a favored child.

Xu Ying waved a dismissive hand, then looked at the car again. [Read More Here] Huo Chen was not among those in the vehicle, which meant he hadn't been arrested. Xu Ying reassured herself that Huo Chen worked in the black market and wouldn't get into trouble so easily.

This unsettling incident left Xu Ying distracted at work. Even when Gu Fuying approached her to discuss her cousin's marriage, Xu Ying struggled to engage in the conversation. "Yingying, are you worried about something?" Gu Fuying asked, confused. She had been excitedly chattering for most of the day, but Xu Ying had remained expressionless.

Xu Ying snapped back to attention when Gu Fuying lightly slapped her arm. She shook her head. "No, it's nothing! Congratulations, your cousin and Dong Wenqiang are a perfect match."

Gu Fuying nodded enthusiastically. "Isn't it a match? You don't know how much my cousin likes Dong Wenqiang now. They already have child. My eldest aunt originally disagreed, but my cousin just cooked the raw rice and threatened my eldest aunt with the child. My eldest aunt's face turned green then; she truly deserved it."

"When is your cousin getting married? Has the date been set?" Xu Ying asked, playing along. Gu Fuying's excitement mounted as she spoke of it. "They're getting married next month! If they've been dragging their feet, and my cousin's belly is getting bigger and bigger. If they wait any longer, it'll be obvious she's pregnant out of wedlock, and our Gu family's reputation will be completely ruined. But my parents don't care about such trivialities; my uncle and aunt, however, are very proud." In the past, her eldest aunt had always tried to paint a bad picture of her, hoping her cousin would overshadow her. Now, with that dream shattered, her aunt was furious.

"Then it is indeed better to get married early," Xu Ying said lightly. She remained distracted throughout the afternoon, finally leaving work to ride her bicycle back to the village.
