Chapter 200: look down on people

Xu Ying’s gaze sharpened as she met Lao Li’s flustered expression. “Otherwise, you’ll just keep worrying that I’ll steal your position sooner or later?” she said bluntly, cutting straight to the heart of his unease.

Lao Li's face turned crimson. “N-No, it's not like that…” he stammered, but Xu Ying, too tired for a drawn-out argument, let his weak denial hang in the air unanswered.

However, the shift in conversation didn’t go unnoticed by the other women in the food factory. They turned their curious gazes to Xu Ying.

“How old are you this year? Do you have a partner?” one aunt asked, scrutinizing her.

[Read More Here] “That’s right, Xiao Xu! You’re so beautiful. Do you already have someone?” another chimed in.

Under their collective gaze, Xu Ying nodded calmly. “Yes,” she replied.

A collective sigh of disappointment rippled through the room.

“What a pity,” one aunt lamented. “Such a lovely girl, good-looking and a fantastic cook too! I was thinking of setting her up with my nephew.”

Lao Li, quick to seize the opportunity, burst out laughing. “Hah! Just drop that idea! Xiao Xu is capable and pretty—how could she possibly be interested in someone like your nephew?”

“Hey! What’s wrong with my nephew?” The aunt flared up, and in no time, she and Lao Li were embroiled in a spirited squabble. Seizing the moment, Xu Ying quietly slipped away.

This food factory was one of the largest in the county and a vital pillar of the local economy. Alongside the textile mill and bakery industry, it provided employment in a time when the country was still developing and grappling with an overwhelming population. This very reality had once sparked the "going to the countryside" campaign.

Though the food factory had a workshop established in Xujia Village, its growing success demanded more talent. As the workforce expanded, previously closed departments were reopened, making the complex even more sprawling.

As Xu Ying wandered around , her thoughts still adrift, a harsh voice jolted her back to reality.

“You there! It’s work hours—why are you loitering here ?” A middle-aged man approached, eyes brimming with disdain.

“Who are you?” Xu Ying countered, her tone calm but curious.

The man flushed with indignation. “You’re not from the factory? Then why are you here? Where’s security?! Someone detain her—how did an outsider sneak in?”

“I am from the factory,” Xu Ying said evenly. “I work in the cafeteria. I just finished my work  and came out  to look around.”

Upon hearing she was from the canteen—and noticing her youth—the man’s expression darkened with even greater contempt. “You’re from the canteen? Then why aren’t you in the canteen? What are you doing near the office area? That’s for leadership staff! What right do you have to be here?”

Xu Ying couldn’t help but laugh, more in disbelief than amusement. “Uncle, I was just walking around the factory compound. I didn’t barge into anyone’s office. That building over there is yours, right? I walked a few steps down the employee street. So what—you’re saying regular employees can’t walk this way? That it’s for leaders only?”

The man puffed up with pride, sneering. “Exactly!”

Xu Ying’s smile vanished. She hadn’t expected to run into someone so overbearing and unreasonable. Without another word, she took out her work permit.

“Sorry to disappoint you, but I’m not just a cafeteria worker. I also work part-time in the R&D Department. That department is in your building, and I’m heading there right now. So what’s the problem?”

With that, she walked straight past the dumbfounded man, leaving him frozen in place. She had never visited the R&D department before, but now, thanks to this unpleasant encounter, she had a reason.

The man gawked at her retreating figure. Then, in disbelief, he hurried after her.

The R&D Department?! That was a place full of intellectuals and college graduates. When had a young girl like her been assigned there? His face twisted with fury. Even if she was from the R&D Department, did that give her the right to disrespect him?

Deputy Director Qian’s rage boiled over as he stormed after her. “You! Stop right there!”

“Old Qian, what’s going on?” Director Sun entered just then, his tone laced with confusion.

The moment Deputy Director Qian saw Director Sun, he launched into a bitter complaint.

“There’s this new girl claiming to work part-time in the R&D department and the cafeteria. I saw her wandering around just now—loafing off work! I thought she was an intruder at first. And when I tried to question her, she was incredibly insolent! She turned her back on me and walked away—just like that! I hadn’t even finished talking!”

His voice rose with indignation.

Director Sun frowned. He knew Xu Ying’s temperament—she wasn’t the sort to behave disrespectfully without reason. There had to be some misunderstanding.

“Old Qian, that’s no outsider. She’s truly one of ours. You know those braised duck and fried product lines we’re developing? That’s her work. There’s definitely been some misunderstanding here. Wait, I’ll go call Xiao Xu over.”

Deputy Director Qian scowled, his pride still bruised. Director Sun was retiring soon, and he was the front-runner for the new directorship. Yet now, this random girl had the audacity to ignore him? He’d remember this till his grave.

Meanwhile, Xu Ying had reached the R&D Department with her work permit in hand.

“Who are you looking for?” a young man at the door asked, eyes flicking over her face curiously.

But then his eyes lit up with mischief, and he shouted back into the department, “Brother Zhou! Is your partner here to find you?”

A moment later, Zhou Yi emerged and froze when he saw Xu Ying. He turned and gave the younger man a sharp glare. “Don’t spout nonsense! Girl, are you here to see someone, or...?”

Xu Ying calmly held up her work permit.

The man with the playful grin leaned over for a look, and surprise flashed in his eyes. “You’re Xu Ying?!”

Zhou Yi, too, looked shocked. “So it’s really you... Hello, Xu Ying. I’m Zhou Yi.[Read More Here] This guy here is Yang Nan. He’s like that, don’t mind him.”

Yang Nan broke into a grin. “Hello, new colleague! We heard the factory director appointed you as our director in the R&D Department, but we hadn’t seen you around. We were starting to think you wouldn’t  show up to work here ever!”

“Director?” Xu Ying blinked in surprise. Director Sun had never mentioned anything about her becoming the head of the department.

Yang Nan nodded quickly. “Yup! Didn’t he tell you? Come on, I’ll introduce you properly. This is our department, and Zhou Yi and I work under you now.”
