Chapter 205: The matchmaker’s ill intentions

Xu Ying couldn’t help but mock herself inwardly. Maybe she was just overthinking again, slipping into old habits. Ever since the betrayal by Dong Wenzhong and Chen Yanran, trusting others had become increasingly difficult for her . She had grown used to spotting the hidden darkness lurking in people's hearts.

Just then, a shrill, familiar laugh pierced her thoughts.

“Hey! Where have you been? Why aren’t you back yet at such a late hour?” Gao Guihua’s voice snapped through the courtyard like a whip. The warmth from moments before vanished, replaced by her usual sharp tone as she noticed several figures approaching the gate.

“I just took them out for a little stroll,” chirped Matchmaker Sun with a wink, her voice light and cheeky as she ushered two men into the yard. Her eyes gleamed as they swept over Xu Ying and Sun Lifang before turning smugly to the men. “Well, how about it? Aren’t these two girls just lovely?”

The two men, immediately captivated by Xu Ying’s stunning beauty, blurted out in unison, “I want the girl on the left!”

Matchmaker Sun’s grin widened. She had expected this reaction.

But the moment Xu Ying laid eyes on her, her expression darkened. Though she’d been busy cooking that day, she had still glimpsed this woman—and her memory was razor-sharp. Even in that thin disguise, she recognized her.

Without hesitation, Xu Ying grabbed Sun Lifang’s wrist. Her voice, ice-cold and unyielding, cut through the tension. “Let’s go.”

Gao Guihua, clearly flustered, blinked. “You haven’t eaten yet. Why are you leaving?” she asked, trying to feign concern. Then, seeing Xu Ying’s unwavering expression, her voice turned more pleading. “Please, at least eat before you go. I haven’t even apologized properly yet.”

Xu Ying’s expression was grim, her eyes like sharpened blades. “Sister Gao, are you sure you really want to apologize?”

“Really!” Gao Guihua replied, her tone laced with desperation. But she couldn’t meet Xu Ying’s gaze.

“Then tell me—who is she?” Xu Ying’s voice dropped to a lethal calm. “Don’t tell me Matchmaker Sun is your so-called relative.”

Sun Lifang froze. Her eyes widened in horror as she stared at Matchmaker Sun and the two strange men. The pieces clicked together with a sickening jolt.

“Sister Gao!” she burst out, her voice blazing with fury. “I actually thought you’d changed! But no—a dog really can’t stop eating shit! I actually believed someone like you!” With that, she turned on her heel to follow Xu Ying.

Matchmaker Sun, seeing her hundred-yuan commission slipping through her fingers, grew frantic. “Girls! Don’t get so worked up! This  aunt’s a matchmaker, yes, but she always means well!” she protested, trying to coax them.

One of the men stepped forward with awkward sincerity. “Girl, I really do like you. Can’t you give me a chance?”

“Get out of the way!” Xu Ying’s brows pinched tightly in fury, her voice rising, every word as cold and precise as a blade.

But Matchmaker Sun refused to budge. She wasn’t going to give up that easily—this wasn’t a match worth a few yuan, it was a full hundred!

“Girl, my family’s well-off! My father’s the director of Qingshan Commune, and my mother’s the school principal! If you marry into our family, you’ll have  nothing to faer in the future!”

Xu Ying’s gaze narrowed. Her tone dropped to a terrifying calm. “Qingshan Commune, huh? I’ll remember that.”

With a swift push, she sent Matchmaker Sun stumbling back several steps.

One of the men, alarmed by her departure, lunged forward to grab her shoulder.

"let go!” Xu Ying snapped, her eyes blazing with disgust. She seized the offending hand and, with a sharp over-the-shoulder throw, slammed him onto the ground.

“Ah! It hurts!” the man shrieked, his mask of civility torn away. “You bitch! Just wait—my dad’s going to deal with you!”

“Oh? I’m waiting,” Xu Ying fired back, voice ringing with righteous fury. “I’m in Xujia Village. My name is Xu Ying.”

Then she turned, her icy stare boring into Gao Guihua. “I’ll be asking you for an explanation for what had  happened today.”

Gao Guihua’s face went pale. She looked from the groaning man on the ground to Xu Ying’s razor-sharp gaze. Regret poured through her like a crashing wave. Ten yuan—that’s what it had been worth to her. But it was over. Completely over.

“Zhang Hao, are you okay?” Matchmaker Sun finally scrambled over to help the man to his feet.

Zhang Hao glared hatefully at Xu Ying’s retreating figure. That bitch! He would make her pay.

As Xu Ying stormed away, her anger still simmering beneath the surface, Sun Lifang right behind her. Still dazed from witnessing Xu Ying’s decisive takedown, she  blinked  and stared at her friend with wide, awed eyes.

Xu Ying turned, surprised by the intensity of her stare asked . “Why are you looking at me like that?”

“Yingying… you’re incredible!” Sun Lifang gasped. “You’re practically a goddess! Tell me, what can’t you do? You can cook, you’re beautiful, you’ve got skills, talent, and now I find out you’re good in a fight, too! If I were a man, I’d  love to marry you!”

Xu Ying couldn’t help but laugh at her friend’s dramatic praise. “Iam  not as impressive as you make it sound.”

Sun Lifang, her head hanging low in guilt, mumbled, “I’m sorry, Yingying… It’s because I trust people too easily. I even doubted you today.”

Xu Ying glanced at her, feeling a soft fondness bloom in her chest. She reached out and ruffled Lifang’s hair gently. “It’s okay. Just remember  this for next time—why would someone who’s always been at odds with you suddenly turn kind? Bad people don’t change so easily.[Read More Here] They either want to flatter you or use you.”

Sun Lifang nodded, her expression solemn as she took the lesson to heart. After saying goodbye, Xu Ying made her way home.

As she approached her courtyard, a familiar figure stood waiting at the gate. Her steps faltered, surprise flashing across her face. “Why are you here?”

Huo Chen’s eyes held a deep tenderness as they locked with hers. “I’m heading to another province. I probably won’t be back until the Chinese New Year. If things get delayed, it might be after that.”

Xu Ying felt her cheeks warm under the intensity of his gaze. “Be careful as you go there ,” she said softly.

Huo Chen nodded, stepping closer. “Wait for me. When I’ve saved up enough, I’ll marry you—grandly.”

“Oaky ,” she said, her voice steady. She believed him and  trusted in his strength.

“Brother Chen, let’s go!” Wu Qingsong’s voice rang out from behind.

Huo Chen leaned in and whispered, “Wait for me okay .”

Xu Ying nodded, waving as he walked away. She didn’t turn until his figure completely vanished. Only then did she step into her courtyard.

Tomorrow, she would take a day off. She needed to visit Qingshan Commune and see just how arrogant its so-called director truly was.

Back home, she pulled out a bucket of instant noodles from her space. This was what she’d been craving all morning. Instant noodles, a juicy ham sausage, and a braised egg—the perfect combination.

As soon as the hot water hit the noodles, a mouthwatering aroma wafted through the air, making her stomach rumble in anticipation. Noodles were wonderful, but a cup of fruit tea or milk tea would make it even better.

Sadly, her space didn’t provide those yet.

“System,” she thought, “can I unlock milk tea and fruit tea with the recipes I’ve gained so far?”

[Host, as long as you’re willing to work hard, there’s no ingredient that can’t be unlocked.]

A brilliant smile spread across her face.
